Generating high quality images in low light conditions is a fundamental and essential element of video surveillance camera, and noise reduction technology is especially important for network-based video surveillance camera in order to optimize transmission and storage efficiency. In extreme low light environment where the amount of light is insufficient, the level of noise remains the same while the components of image signals decrease, ultimately resulting in greater noise effects. High level of noise degrades the image discrimination power and increases the size of the data when compressing image, which causes reduction of transmission and storage efficiency.

Through SSNR (Smart Super Noise Reduction), Hanwha Vision’s unique low light image process technology, we are able to provide clear color images in dark environments with limited light by effectively reducing the noise and by minimizing the afterimage (motion blur) of objects. Through this, the size of image data is also significantly reduced allowing efficient storage and network transmission.

Third, high complexity image processing technology is required.

Based on many years of experience in the image processing industry, Hanwha Vision has developed a high performance noise reduction technology and an image correction technology which maintains brightness, color reproducibility and sharpness in extreme low light environments. We have put together these technologies and named it Smart Super Noise Reduction (SSNR) technology. Hanwha Vision’s SSNR is an advanced spatio-temporal noise reduction technology optimized for video surveillance cameras.

extremeWDR

For clear and vivid image against strong backlit

Video surveillance cameras have been developed to provide the best image quality under difficult and changing lighting environments. One of the most important aspects is the Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) or backlight correction technology, which reacts to the change of light. WDR is a technology for obtaining an excellent image by resolving the difference in brightness when the background is brighter than the main object or glare is generated by strong lighting.

Generally, WDR is required in the following situations:

  • During daytime, where it is relatively dark inside a building and bright outside.
  • A bright light shines towards the camera, such as with a car approaching the camera with its’ headlights turned on.

Hanwha Vision has been working continuously to strengthen its WDR function to provide optimized and vivid images in the strong backlit scenes. Hanwha Vision introduced the Wisenet7 implemented with the extreme WDR technology which can produce high resolution images suitable for forensic search application in the environment with strong backlit.

The WDR technology applied to Hanwha Vision cameras provide excellent image quality while minimizing side effects to deliver videos suitable for all applications.

extremeWDR

Image. Wisenet7 extreme WDR integration

The WDR technology applied to Hanwha Vision’s Wisenet7 chipset uses variable exposure WDR type and it gathers a number of images with various exposure and blends them into one composite WDR video. To achieve extreme WDR following process is executed.

Scene Based Adaptive Tone Mapping

Hanwha Vision’s WDR technology uses SBATM (Scene Based Adaptive Tone Mapping), a technology that analysis and reacts to the surrounding images in order to obtain a natural looking image. This technology can generate natural images without the loss of information.

Local Contrast Enhancement

While trying to acquire the Wide Dynamic Range, the issue of decreased gradation can happen in some areas. In this case, a video with a good Dynamic Range but poor contrast can be the result. The Wisenet7 chipset supports a Local Contrast Enhancement feature to deal with this issue. As shown in Image 4, you can still achieve a video with Wide Dynamic Range and high contrast on the whole scene, providing a nature image and full visibility.

WiseStream III

Reduce data size while retaining image quality of meaningful objects

The widespread adoption of high-quality video equipment is augmenting the video data size, highlighting the importance and necessity of data reduction. Efficient network streaming and data saving require ‘video compression’ that reduces data size while maintaining image quality of meaningful objects such as humans and vehicles.

Hanwha Vision WiseStreamⅢ is an AI-driven technology that effectively retains high video quality at low data size. The technology enables users to efficiently process more high-quality footage without installing additional network and storage devices.

Define importance of objects in the scene, Apply different compression rates accordingly

Powered by AI, WiseStreamⅢ identifies major objects and selectively applies compression rates depending on the significance of objects in the video, and WiseStreamⅡ analyzes motion in video and applies different compression rates on static and dynamic areas in the video for bandwidth reduction.

Hanwha Vision enhanced compression technology significantly reduces the data size and bandwidth while maintaining the original image quality of significant objects; humans and vehicles.

Low Bitrate and data size
Maintain image quality of meaningful objects
Maximized operational efficiency

AI based low-light image processing technology

For clear and vivid image under strong backlit

In low light environments, if gain level is increased in order to raise sensitivity in low light environments, noise is amplified as much as signal is amplified. In extreme low light environment where the amount of light is insufficient, noise remains the same while the components of image signals decrease, resulting in greater noise effects. This noise degrades the image discrimination power and increases the size of the data when compressing image which causes reduction of transmission and storage efficiency.

Generating high quality images in low light conditions is a fundamental and essential element of video surveillance camera, and noise reduction technology is especially important for network based video surveillance camera in order to provide transmission and storage efficiency.

Hanwha Vision’s latest AI based low-light image processing technology offers efficient monitoring of detected objects in low-light environment. Also, it helps to capture the cutting-edge BestShots, one of the most important features required in AI camera. It greatly enhances the efficiency of videos by removing inevitable noises and minimizing objects’ motion blur based on analyzed AI data.

WiseNRⅡ

The latest noise reduction technology, WiseNRⅡ, utilizes AI object detection technology to identify object appearance/movements and remove motion blur adaptively in low light environments with large amounts of noise. This effectively resolves the issue of image blur and ghosts effect caused by excessive noise reduction.

AI based Prefer Shutter

Unlike conventional technologies that mainly controlled high speed shutters to reduce motion blur, AI based Prefer Shutter technology utilizes the latest AI technology to identify appearance and movement of objects, and readjusts the Prefer Shutter value to an optimal level to effectively improve noise and reduce motion blur. In a scene without objects, shutters are automatically adjusted to low speed to maintain low levels of noise as well as bright and clear images. In a scene with lots of object appearance and movements, Shutters are adjusted to high speed to reduce motion blur and deliver clear images.

Wisenet AI

AI End-to-End Security Solutions

As AI becomes more broadly adopted across industries, it is likely to be more widely incorporated in video surveillance in the upcoming year. Edge-based AI (which filters and processes data locally on a camera) will be more ubiquitous, enabling end-to-end AI technology. Today, most security cameras send the data they collect to servers to be analyzed. However, with edge-based AI, the data is analyzed by the camera first, and subsequently sent to the server. This reduces the burden of transferring and storing large amounts of data to a server, thereby increasing efficiency, saving time, and reducing server costs typically required to analyze data.

Increase event monitoring accuracy by reducing false alarm

As the number of surveillance cameras grows along with the cities, an operator may be presented with too much information to handle, as conventional cameras equipped with motion-based detection generate too many event alarms. With operators under great strain to verify each one, there could be delays in response times. Now, AI algorithms built into P series AI cameras are able to dramatically help improve operator efficiency.

Classify Target Objects with attributes

P series AI cameras differentiates what it sees into broad categories such as ‘Person’, ‘Face’, ‘Vehicle’ and ‘license plate’. Delving deeper, AI algorithms are quickly and accurately able to identify the different attributes of the objects within the camera’s field of view. For example, the camera sees a person and immediately detects the color of clothing. It is also intelligent enough to distinguish whether the person is wearing glasses or holding a bag. These attributes are then saved as metadata alongside the captured footage.

WiseDetector to specifically detect user-interested objects

WiseDetector detects user-interested objects with P AI cameras. Once the training is done and the data is sent to the cameras, WiseDetector will function as one of the regular detection on the WiseAI application.

Disease prevention solutions by using AI technology

P series AI cameras can prevent the spread of disease through multiple AI functions. Wisenet occupancy monitoring application enables P series AI cameras with people counting function which prevents people to be over-crowded. In addition, the attribute classification function enables face mask detection through P series AI cameras in order to send alerts. Finally, P series AI cameras detects each individual and therefore sends out alerts if the proximity gets higher than pre-set distance.

BestShots for minimizing storage and bandwidth requirements

P series AI cameras are equipped with a BestShot feature which ensures that only the most suitable images of classified objects are sent to the storage server. Each image can be up to cropped 4K quality, along with tagged attributes metadata. Users have the option to set the image resolution at 2MP for full video streaming or use the BestShot feature to minimize bandwidth and storage requirements.

AI search when used with non-AI cameras

P series AI NVRs support AI search even when users have only non-AI cameras installed at sites. Users can search various objects such as people, vehicles, faces and license plates by using non AI cameras with P series AI NVRs. Up to 32CH cameras are supported for AI search feature. (In case of 64CH NVRs)

**non-AI cameras should be P/X series cameras.

AI NVR supports LPR (License Plate Recognition) search

P series AI NVRs support LPR search when working with non AI cameras or AI cameras together. Users can easily and instantly search License Plates using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology which are recorded with digital data based on letters and numbers.

Wisenet SSM, the best partner for AI smart search

P series AI cameras are fully supported by Wisenet SSM Video Management Software (VMS), enabling operators to quickly forensically search for specific events or for objects with defined attributes, by filtering the recorded metadata.

7 Concerns and 7 Solutions of Cybersecurity with Hanwha Vision

Key Concern 01

Can hackers gain access to my network by contaminating my video surveillance devices?

Solution

Once hackers plant malicious codes in firmware, sensitive information (certifications, encryption key, encryption processing, video information, etc) can be leaked.

Wisenet7 chipsets contain Hanwha Vision’s own embedded security platform module, HTPM (Hanwha Trusted Platform Module). Critical information is saved in the Secure Storage of chipsets and processed through the Secure OS.

Additionally, the Secure Boot feature verifies firmware during each step of the device boot, blocking the execution of malicious firmware once infected.

Key Concern 02

Is there a possibility of data leakage during communication between interconnected video surveillance devices(e.g. Camera-server)?

Solution

To achieve safe communication between interconnected security devices, one must use encryption to protect communication and all Devices should be cross-verified and authenticated.

Without mutual authentication, hackers can employ the ‘Man in the Middle’ attack to eavesdrop or tamper with the data during encrypted communication.

Hanwha Vision supports mutual authentication of interconnected devices to prevent hacking during encrypted communication, securing sensitive information from leakage or damage. In 2018, it introduced its own ‘Root CA,’ inserting device authentication to each product in the manufacturing stage. Even if one camera is hacked due to security vulnerabilities, the entire system can still be protected as the authentication is all different for each device.

Mutual authentication between devices enables secure communication, while authentication per device can defend the system against large-scale hacking.

Key Concern 03

Can a third party read or alter my video footage?

Solution

Video footage captured by all cameras is encrypted during the entire process of data transfer, storage and backup.

Without encryption, personal video can be leaked or altered by others regardless of the user’s intention.

Hanwha Vision supports data encryption during video transfer or data storage on camera SD memory cards as well as ZIP encryption for data backup on PCs or other storage devices.

Key Concern 04

Can malicious software break into my security devices through firmware or open and run platform applications?

Solution

Devices compromised by malicious software can give a hacker the ability to run system actions, this will be true for compromised Open Platform apps too.

Wisenet7 security verification checks for data integrity at boot up or after updates.

An electronic signature is employed to secure open platform apps. Each app vendor is supplied with their own key to perform verification every time an app is installed.

These measures can ensure the integrity of Open Platform apps and completely block malicious firmware or apps from operating.

Malicious software will be rendered inoperable by the electronic signature which prevents compromised firmware or apps from running.

Key Concern 05

Can we trust the products that are claimed to meet manufacturer’s own security standards?

Solution

Customers cannot fully rely on products to be secure against cyber threats if the manufacturer only uses its own security testing or standards for cybersecurity.

Hanwha Vision is officially certified for its overall security processes. Proven by the acquisition of the Cybersecurity Assurance Program from UL, and ‘Secure by Default’ certifications from globally recognized safety standard and certification organizations.

By evaluating the objective level of product security and acquiring certifications from expert third parties, we build cybersecurity systems that customers can trust.

Key Concern 06

Do I have to configure the product on my own to make the product secure?

Solution

Cybersecurity as a term is frightening to most individuals for being highly technical and requiring in-depth knowledge. If their additional efforts are required to secure a device, it will not be done or not be done well. Hanwha Vision’s Wisenet 7 products are designed to work straight out of the box without any user intervention and still be useable without creating obstacles to function.

Hanwha Vision also provide documentation in the form of the Network Hardening Guide for those who wish to take the security configuration even further.

Should you not have the time or the know-how to secure your devices, Hanwha Vision has introduced the Wisenet7 range of video security devices to offer robust security without user intervention /right out of the box.

Key Concern 07

What can I do in the case that I find a security vulnerability in the product?

Solution

In the event of a security vulnerability in video surveillance devices, it is critical to quickly analyze the causes and take countermeasures.

Hanwha Vision is operating S-CERT department, a team dedicated to address possible security vulnerabilities and minimize customer inconvenience.

If you suspect security vulnerability, report it to S-CERT (secure.cctv@hanwha.com) with detailed information including product information, symptoms, and step-by-step instructions on how to reproduce the symptoms.
In the event of a security vulnerability, S-CERT resolves the issue as soon as possible and posts the security vulnerability report on the website.

Regular security tests and penetration testing by specialized agencies are conducted to find security vulnerabilities and remove the risks of exposing customers’ sensitive information.

Hanwha Vision’s cybersecurity team S-CERT has established a process of building secure products from the product design stage and reacts promptly in the event of a security vulnerability.
