As South Korea’s top parcel delivery company, CJ Logistics handles over 1.5 billion packages a year. That’s a huge undertaking, requiring them to operate around 700 logistics centers nationwide, sprawling across roughly 11.3 million square meters. Among these, the Gonjiam Mega Hub Terminal, is Asia’s largest logistics center and processes an astounding 2.5 million parcels daily.
Naturally, operating such massive facilities safely is a top priority. CJ Logistics has invested heavily in safety infrastructure and training, even opening a dedicated safety experience center in 2023 to boost employee awareness. They also run annual safety campaigns.
But even with these efforts, accidents can still happen, especially given the sheer scale and dynamic nature of their operations. CJ Logistics saw an opportunity to make better use of the many security cameras monitored 24/7 in their EHS (Environment, Health, and Safety) situation room. They began exploring AI technology to respond more quickly and effectively to the complex and varied risks on the ground.
To take their safety management system to the next level, CJ Logistics decided to implement an intelligent video surveillance system. Their goal was clear: leverage AI to detect and respond to hazards with greater accuracy and speed, reinforcing their core value of prioritizing employee safety.
To achieve this, CJ Logistics conducted a thorough Proof of Concept (PoC) with several video surveillance companies, including Hanwha Vision. They simulated various real-world scenarios – like workers not wearing proper protective gear, falls, and even fires – to rigorously test each company’s AI capabilities. They evaluated everything from accuracy and stability to scalability. In the end, Hanwha Vision‘s AI cameras stood out for their superior performance and were chosen as the partner.
CJ Logistics installed 136 Hanwha Vision PNO-A9081R AI cameras across 22 terminals, including the Gonjiam Mega Hub. These cameras boast 4K resolution and advanced AI-based object detection. To further enhance safety, they integrated worker safety AI software (AIA-C01SF), enabling precise detection of unequipped PPE, worker collapses, and entry into restricted areas.
A CJ Logistics official noted, “Compared to pixel-based motion detection, Hanwha Vision‘s AI cameras were far more efficient because they didn’t trigger alarms for irrelevant movements like shadows. Adding AI solutions specifically tailored for worker safety allowed us to build an intelligent video surveillance system perfectly optimized for our logistics centers.”
Hanwha Vision‘s worker safety AI software is particularly impressive. It accurately detects falls, a common industrial accident, while ignoring normal postures like sitting, drastically reducing false alarms. It can also effectively spot workers entering dangerous zones or engaging in unsafe actions by setting up virtual safety lines. For tasks like working on conveyor belts, where hands might touch machinery, the system can even exclude specific body parts from detection, ensuring highly precise monitoring. This empowers organizations to prevent accidents and minimize losses by enabling swift responses when incidents do occur.
By implementing this specialized worker safety AI software, CJ Logistics has significantly upgraded its intelligent video surveillance system, creating an optimal safety management framework tailored to their logistics operations.
CJ Logistics is rapidly transforming into a smart logistics center thanks to Hanwha Vision‘s AI solution.
The approximately 2,900 Hanwha Vision cameras already in place across their terminals, combined with the new AI cameras, have formed an even more robust network, creating an intelligent system dedicated to worker safety.
A CJ Logistics official explained, “Elderly workers face a higher risk of falls due to declining physical capabilities. So, we’ve prioritized placing AI cameras in areas with a higher concentration of older employees. This allows us to quickly detect incidents and send alerts, helping us secure that critical ‘golden time.’ We fully expect this will lead to a safer working environment by boosting our ability to respond instantly to hazardous situations.”
Beyond safety, the AI system has also boosted the productivity of their control center staff.
Before, operators had to manually scrutinize countless camera feeds for any signs of trouble. Now, the AI-powered system automatically detects abnormal situations through real-time data analysis, allowing for much more effective responses. This has led to reduced fatigue for control center employees and increased monitoring accuracy.
