The rapid growth of electric vehicles across Europe is transforming our roads, but as with any innovation, it is also creating a growing security challenge. EV charging stations are increasingly targeted for cable theft and vandalism, driven by the high value of the copper in charging cables and anti-EV sentiment. It can cost operators thousands per unit to repair a damaged charging station, frustrating EV drivers when a charger is unavailable.
The scale of the challenge is growing. German operator EnBW alone recorded more than 900 cases of cable theft at over 130 locations in 2025, resulting in damages amounting to several million euros. Danish energy company OK reported a three-fold rise in charging cable theft in the first half of 2025. And with many charging stations located in distributed, sometimes remote locations, securing and maintaining continuous oversight of them is a distinct challenge for operators.

24/7 monitoring of every bay
Hanwha Vision cameras can be positioned above charging bays to provide comprehensive coverage of the charging environment, including entrances and exits. With Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA), the cameras can also identify specific behaviours and activity, giving operators greater insight into what is happening. For example, if a vehicle remains in a charging bay beyond a pre-defined period, an alert can be sent to operators that the vehicle may be occupying the space without charging. Likewise, a person detected within a specific zone of the charging station, such as behind the power delivery box, might be tampering with equipment. Operators can be alerted and review the incident remotely to investigate.
Morphean’s Alarm Zones functionality can virtually arm and disarm specific areas according to defined conditions. When a vehicle is present in a designated charging bay, the zone can automatically disarm because the activity is expected. Once the vehicle leaves and the bay becomes vacant, it can automatically re-arm. If a person subsequently enters the empty bay, the system recognises this as an exception and can generate a notification to operators or an alarm receiving centre.
The solution can be made even more precise by connecting the charging station directly to the camera. When the charging unit is actively being used, an alarm input can confirm that the vehicle is legitimately charging. If a vehicle remains in the bay without the charging input being activated, the system can raise an alert, helping operators distinguish normal activity from potentially suspicious behaviour.
From detection to intervention
Identifying unusual activity is only part of the solution. Morphean enables remote incident management, allowing alerts to be sent to relevant personnel or an alarm receiving centre, which is particularly valuable for unattended and remote locations.
The combination can also support active deterrence. Analytics running on Hanwha Vision cameras can trigger connected devices through Morphean, such as strobe lighting, when suspicious activity is detected. This provides an opportunity to intervene while an incident is taking place rather than discovering a damaged cable or charger afterwards. Because operators can identify and respond to suspicious activity early, costly damage and downtime can be avoided.
Supporting charger health and uptime
The same integration can also help operators monitor the operational health of their charging infrastructure. Charging units can be connected to camera inputs so that warnings generated by the equipment are passed into the Morphean platform. Staff or an alarm receiving centre can then be notified when a unit requires attention, helping teams respond proactively to potential faults.
Cloud-based recording also provides a central source of evidence when incidents occur. Operators can remotely access relevant footage to support investigations, insurance claims and law enforcement.
